During a laser tattoo removal you’ll be given a pair of protective eye cover. Your skin will be tested for any reaction to the laser to determine the most effective energy for treatment. Smaller tattoos will require fewer pulses while larger ones will need more to remove them. In either case, to completely get rid of a tattoo, it will take several treatments. After each visit, your tattoo should become progressively lighter. Results largely depend upon the colour and the depth of your tattoo.
If your tattoo is too small then it is best removed surgically by bringing the edges of skin together. Large tattoos may need a skin graft. Preferably Full thickness graft is used as it gives a better colour match. Alternatively large areas can be removed by serial Excisions. There is another method where tissue expanders are inserted as a deflated balloon under the skin next to the tattoo. This balloon is then inflated over a period of time to stretch the skin. Once the skin is stretched to its desired size, the tattoo is excised and is covered with the stretched skin.
