The correction of protruding Ear deformity is called Otoplasty (Ear pinning). Protruding or bat ears have a profound psychological effect on a growing child.
Aesthetic plastic surgery can improve the shape or placement by positioning the ears closer to the head by reshaping the cartilage. Surgery is possible at any age, but is often recommended for children as they near total ear development at age five or six.
Preoperative Workup:
Anaesthesia: It can be performed under local or general anaesthesia.
Incisions:
An incision is made on the back of the ear in the crease.
The cartilage is modified (excised or reshaped) depending on the preoperative plan. The angle between the ear and the head is reduced and permanent stitches are used to retain the ear in the new position.
Duration of Surgery: 1-2 hrs.
Hospital Stay: Day Care Procedure.
Results and Recovery: You should be careful not to sleep on the sides for about 3 weeks. Pain and bruising near the ear are expected but is controlled by medication. Normal activity can be started in 2-3 days.
Cost: Can be discussed with Dr Sumita Shankar at the time of consultation.
