Nose Reshaping

Surgery of the nose improves the appearance and proportion of your nose, enhancing facial harmony and self-confidence. Both men and women commonly request nose surgery. Plastic surgery can correct the obvious deformities as well as refine the nose.

Rhinoplasty can change:
Nose size, in relation to facial balance
Nose width, at the bridge or in the size and position of the nostrils
Nose profile, with visible humps or depressions on the bridge
Nasal tip, that is enlarged or bulbous, drooping, upturned or hooked
Nostrils that are large, wide or upturned
Nasal asymmetry
Nasal Septum Deviation

Procedure

Incision:

The incision is given over the columella and is generally hidden. Through this incision, the soft tissues that cover the nose are gently raised, allowing access to reshape the structure of the nose. For alar flare reduction surgery incisions are given at the alar base.

Reshaping the nose structure
Surgery of the nose can reduce or augment nasal structures with the use of cartilage/bone graft from other areas of your body. Most commonly, pieces of cartilage from the septum, the partition in the middle of the nose is used for this purpose. Occasionally a piece of cartilage from the ear or a section of rib cartilage can be used.

Correcting a deviated septum
If the septum is deviated, it is straightened and the projections inside the nose are reduced to improve breathing

Surgery Time: 1-2 hours
Hospital Stay: Day care
Stitches: Usually none or removed in 5-7 days.

Results and Recovery:

Splints and tapes support the nose as it begins to heal for approximately one week to ten days. The change is seen within 6-8 weeks following surgery, with continued refinement for 6-12 months.

Activities: You will be able to perform routine work in a week's time and for strenuous activities it may take 3months.

Cost of Nose Reshaping:

Depends on how much the nose needs to be changed. Some of the changes can be made under local anaesthesia, which costs less than when general anaesthesia is needed. When implant is used the cost is added to the surgery. The Cost can be discussed at the time of consultations.

Septorhinoplasty

Correction of deviated septum along with nose, reshaping as desired. A surgical procedure performed to repair defects or deformities of both the nasal septum and the external nasal pyramid.

Alar Reduction

Surgery for correction of Alar Flare or over hanging Alar. The complaint of a nostril that is too wide is a problem which we more frequently encounter among many patients and especially in certain ethnic groups. Most commonly, evidence of alar resection is noted as a tear drop or Q deformity in the base of the nostril. In others the nasal base appears abnormal as the smooth contour of the nasal sill has been interrupted or because resection has resulted in more marked asymmetry.

FAQ

Am I a good candidate for nose surgery?
It is important that you have a clear idea of how you would like your nose to look and, at the same time, realize that there are limitations to the procedure. Patients with sufficient physical and emotional maturity who undergo rhinoplasty because they want to enhance their self-image are usually very satisfied with their decision.

What is the right age for Rhinoplasty?
Nose is done after 15 years in girls and 16 in boys when the nose growth is complete. There is no upper age limit.

How is the nose surgery done?
There are two main techniques closed rhinoplasty wherein all the incisions are made inside the nostrils and Open rhinoplasty where external incision is placed in the columellar region.
Other steps involved are depending upon the need and the necessity.
If you want to narrow the upper part: Osteotomies are performed.
For removing the Hump on Nose: Excess bone/cartilage is shaved off.
For elevating the nose Bridge: Silicone implant or bone or cartilage graft is placed on the nose bridge under the skin.
For flared nostrils and broad lower nose: Alar excision-small wedges of skin, as shown, are removed to narrow the base of the nose or reduce the width of the nostrils.
For bulky tip: Tip reduction- the cartilages that make the tip, are made smaller and shapely, fat is removed.
For tip shaping: Cartilage graft from septum of nose or from ear is placed inside the tip. Are there going to be visible scars on the nose?
If you undergo open rhinoplasty or surgery for alar flare you will have visible stitches. The resultant scar due to these stitches is negligible and not visible.

When can I resume my normal activities?
Straining, bending and lifting should be avoided during the early postoperative period. In many instances, you may be able to return to work within a week or ten days after surgery. Most normal activities including exercise can usually be resumed within three weeks. It will be a few months before you can expose your reshaped nose to direct sunlight. Your nose will be sensitive during this time, and you must be conscientious about using a sunblock to protect your skin. If the bones of your nose were altered, it may be a number of weeks before you can wear glasses without special support such as tape.

How long will the results last?
In most instances, the results of rhinoplasty are permanent, except for possible changes associated with the normal aging process.

What are the complications associated with rhinoplasty?
Significant complications from rhinoplasty are infrequent. If you have opted for implants for dorsal augmentation there is a potential risk of extrusion or infection involved. Occasionally, if the surgical outcome needs further improvement, additional surgery may be necessary.

How much does the nose surgery cost?
Cost of nose surgery depends on how much alterations in nose are required, on surgeons experience and skills and hospital facilities. Plastic surgery is a combination of science and art and results vary from person to person and from surgeon to surgeon. Personal consultation is the best way for surgeon to assess you and your nose and for you to assess the surgeon. Only then the cost can be best determined.

How many days I need to be off work?
After surgery you may have Splint or Taping over the nose. You will be required to have them for 7-10 days. Additionally if you have to undergo any osteotomies you may have swelling around your eyes with bruises. This also lasts for 7-10days. It is safe to take two weeks off work. It is very important to remember that every person heals at different rates.

How soon after the surgery can I see the results?
It takes 3-4 weeks before you start appreciating the results. Nasal skin drapes over the modified framework gradually over the subsequent 3-6 months. Your final outcome will be visible appreciably by the end of one year.

Is nose surgery covered by insurance?
Cosmetic / plastic surgery of nose are not covered by insurance in India.

Is it possible to show me how my nose will look after surgery?
Yes, it is possible to do so. But it is not advisable for you to judge the outcome of your surgery on that. Surgeon cannot make tissues respond like a click of a button. Hence actual result will always be different from the software image So real result may be better or worse than the software modified image.

Can other surgeries be combined with nose surgery?
Yes, other surgeries like chin augmentation, fat injection, liposuction and any other body contouring surgery can be combined with nose surgery.

Is silicone implant safe for elevating the nose?
Yes, silicone implants are safe and time tested.

What is the difference between implants and grafts from one's own body? Which is better?
You have an option of choosing artificial implants or go for autogenous tissue such as your own bone / cartilage. There are advantages and limitations of each option. You can discuss them during your consultations.
