BOTOX is a toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum and is used as a paralyzing agent for the muscles of expression. This weakens the fine muscles in the forehead, around the eyes and the glabellar areas as a result frown lines, forehead creases and crows feet are reduced or eliminated.
BOTOX is also being used to reduce sweating in the axilla, palms of hand and feet. Treatment is in the form of multiple injections made using very fine needles with ice or local anesthetic cream to numb the area. The injections are not painful. The effects start to appear in a couple of days and the best result is seen in a week. The results generally last about 4-6 months and then the injection has to be repeated. The injections done multiple times may give a longer lasting result. For many years, it has been used in the treatment of patients who have spasmodic contractions of the eye or other facial muscles in conditions such as hemi-facial spasm or blepharospasm, as well as certain spasmodic voice disorders.
BOTOX injections appear to be very safe. The most serious side effect is drooping of the upper lid due to paralysis of the lid muscle or double vision caused by paralysis of small muscles of the eye. This complication is temporary and will disappear once the effect of botox wears off. This is avoided by keeping the injection away from the lid and not lying down for 4 hours after the injection. No systemic side effect has been reported to date. There may be some minor bruising which can be covered up with makeup.
After care
The head should be held elevated for 4 hours or more (no lying down). Ice application to the injected area will help in reduction of bruising and swelling. Makeup can be used within a hour. Expect results to start appearing in a couple of days and best results take a week.
Injected fillers is primarily used to improve the appearance of the skins texture. It can help fill out deep facial wrinkles, creases and furrows, skin depressions and some types of scars. It can also be used to give a fuller, more sensuous look to the lips. fillers is not usually sufficient for severe surface wrinkles on the face, such as multiple vertical "lipstick lines" that sometimes form around the mouth.
Before Treatment
Prior to the start of treatment we will see you in the office for a consultation and evaluation. At this time we will discuss your goals and desires for treatment, and go over any concerns or questions you may have.
Duration of Surgery:
The fillers is injected using a fine needle inserted at several points along the edge of the site. Overfilling is necessary to allow for absorption in the weeks following treatment. You may feel a slight stinging or burning as the site is injected. However, most people report the injections to be of only minor discomfort.
After Treatment
Most patients resume normal activities following treatment inspite of some temporary puffiness over the area. Generally, within a few days this will resolve and the material is no longer visibly distinguishable from the surrounding skin.
Results of fillers Injections
The results of your fillers injection will vary for each individual as will the length of time it will last. Some patients have reported their treatment lasting a year or longer, while others report a duration of only 3-6 months. Therefore, repeated injections may be necessary. We will discuss with you how to maintain your results with repeated treatments.
Can the augmentation be made permanent?
The results obtained from fillers treatment can be made permanent by injecting your own fat (FAMI) or augmenting using your own tissue. The results thus obtained do sustain for 5-10 years with small touch-ups required at a later date.
Fat injection / Autologous Fat Transfer
Using one's own fat cells to augment and fill defects is a time tested and safe option. Results are permanent. Touch ups may be required in a few patients. Fat is harvested by liposuction using special technique and processed to remove tissue debris and injected as beads in layers to increase the viability. There is no chance of allergy or rejection. Works well for hollow under eyes, deep lines and sunken cheeks.
Tissue grafts
Dermafat, dermis, fascia and muscle are viable permanent fillers. They are most useful in lip augmentation. Although this is not non surgical, the fact that the results are permanent make it an attractive option. Grafts can be harvested from locations where the incisions can be well hidden.
Permanent fillers can cause suboptimal result with lumpy feel. Granulomas can form within tissue with some of the fillers. Removal of permanent filler would be extremely difficult if necessary US FDA has not yet approved any permanent synthetic filler for clinical use.
Permanent Fat removal
Injection lipolysis is a relatively new method for fat reduction. A concoction of fat busting chemicals is injected to areas of fat deposit. The injection causes permanent destruction of fat cells in the area and gets rid of the "bulges".
This method has been proven to be safe in multi - centric trials. Although it is appealing as a non - surgical option, this method is effective only for small areas of fat deposits and is not a substitute for liposuction. Lipolysis works well for spot reduction of fat and cellulite.
This is a viable option for people with localised fat deposits and those who do not want to undergo a surgical procedure.
This procedure does not require anesthesia or hospital stay. The full effect of procedure is seen after 4- 6 weeks.
